Best charter schools in Calgary: how to pick the right one for your child

No single charter school is best; the right one depends on focus, grades, how it admits, deadline, fees and busing.

How do you pick the right charter school?

Seven things decide the fit. Go through them in this order: the first few can rule a campus out before you look at anything else.

  1. Admission method Lottery, rolling waitlist or assessment. This decides what you have to do and when.
  2. Deadline Some campuses close in November or January. Rolling-waitlist campuses have no deadline at all.
  3. Grades Each campus covers a different grade range, and most admit at one entry grade.
  4. Focus STEM, arts, classical, traditional, girls-only, ESL or gifted.
  5. Fees Tuition is free everywhere, but extras such as uniforms, enrichment fees or an application fee vary.
  6. Busing Most campuses offer busing for a fee; some do not guarantee it.
  7. Siblings Sibling priority exists at most campuses, on different terms at each.

Questions about choosing a charter school

Which charter school is the best in Calgary?

No Calgary charter school is best for every child, and there is no official ranking or published test-score comparison to base one on. The best school is the one whose focus, grades, admission method, deadline, fees and busing fit your child and your family.

Do charter schools cost money?

No — all charter schools are publicly funded and tuition-free, exactly like a CBE school. You may still pay for extras, which vary by school, some of which are required while others are optional: a full-day kindergarten, uniforms, annual enrichment or activity fees, busing, or a one-off application fees.

How is a charter school different from a CBE alternative program?

The difference is who admits you. A charter school is an independent public school with its own board, and it admits city-wide by lottery, by waitlist date, or by assessment. A CBE alternative program — a traditional learning centre, a fine arts program, or GATE — is run by the Calgary Board of Education and admits by catchment, zone or internal referral.

Is a charter school better than a CBE school?

Neither is better across the board. The difference is who admits you: a charter school is an independent public school with its own board that admits city-wide, while a CBE program is run by the Calgary Board of Education and admits by catchment, zone or referral. Both are tuition-free, so the choice comes down to fit.
